Voice collectors: stories and songs of Chinese culture bearers
Published 2021
Voice collectors is a vibrant collection of the many different musical traditions that come from the country of China. In this book, thirty-two Chinese men and women--representing a variety of ages, occupations, geographic regions, and ethnicities--joyfully recall their musical experiences and share popular or significant songs from their home provinces. Each chapter includes a biographical sketch and photograph of its Culture Bearer, followed by a vocal or instrumental selection of their choosing. Beautiful field recordings featuring authentic musical performances by each Culture Bearer are included for all songs, along with notation (when applicable), background and translations, pinyin, and audio pronunciation guides. Each chapter also conveniently includes ideas for classroom use--pedagogical extensions, activities, and discussion questions--as well as ideas for at-home use with families. Especially noteworthy are the short, imaginative children's stories and vibrant full-color illustrations that conclude each chapter, offering yet another entry point for young learners. Equally suited for the elementary and middle school music classrooms or for at-home use, Voice Collectors is the perfect source for exploring the diversity of musical sounds, textures, instruments, and timbres of Chinese music in a meaningful and culturally connected way.

World Music Pedagogy: Secondary School Innovations
Published 2018
World Music Pedagogy, Volume III: Secondary School Innovations provides a rationale and a resource for the implementation of World Music Pedagogy in middle and high school music classes, grades 7–12 (ages 13–18). Such classes include secondary general music, piano, guitar, songwriting, composition/improvisation, popular music, world music, music technology, music production, music history, and music theory courses. This book is not a depository of ready-made lesson plans but rather a tool to help middle and high school teachers to think globally in the music classroom. Strategies and techniques of World Music Pedagogy are promoted by discussions of a multicultural music education, descriptive vignettes of realistic teaching environments, conversations with culture-bearers/pedagogues, and prompts for self-reflection. This volume approaches important issues of multicultural education and social justice that are often neglected in music education texts—proving to be a valuable resource for both nascent music educators and veteran practitioners alike. Listening Episode music examples can be accessed on the eResource site from the Routledge catalog page.
