Introduction
Joseph A. Singleton is an Assistant Professor of Law and Director of the upcoming St. Thomas Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic. Prior to joining St. Thomas, Singleton was the Health Law & Policy Fellow at the Wake Forest University School of Law, where he was the supervising attorney for Wake Forest Law’s Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic under Allyson E. Gold, conducted health law and policy research with Mark A. Hall, and co-taught an upper-level health law course with Chris N. Coughlin.
Singleton’s research interests include health law and policy, public health, life sciences, health insurance, hospital regulation, medical malpractice, long-term care, and medical-legal partnerships.
As a law student at Wake Forest, Singleton worked as a research assistant for the American Law Institute under lead Reporter Mark A. Hall on the landmark Restatement of the Law Third, Torts: Medical Malpractice. He also served as a teaching assistant for Selected Topics in Health Care Law and completed two semesters in the Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic. He earned top grades in multiple courses in health law, intellectual property, and legal research.
During his Wake Forest Law fellowship, Singleton worked on health policy projects, including Medicaid expansion’s impact on North Carolina’s health care safety net and the effects of private equity acquisitions on local physician contracts. He also contributed to a report on HCA Healthcare’s purchase of Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. His most recent co-authored article, Proportional Possession, featured in the Cornell Law Review, discusses the foundations of American eviction law and explores how modern eviction courts disproportionality prioritize the interests of property owners over the possessory interests of tenants, leading to unjust outcomes.
Professor Singleton received his J.D. from the Wake Forest University School of Law, M.A. from the University of Chicago, and B.M.E. from Northern Kentucky University. Before law school, Singleton worked as a legal assistant for five years at a nationally respected law firm that represented victims of nursing home abuse and neglect and medical malpractice.
