Introduction

Bernie Armada's (Ph.D. Pennsylvania State University) research focuses on the intersection of applied improvisation, storytelling, and communication. He uses theatrical improvisation and storytelling to help students and professionals unlock their authentic selves to connect with and move others. He helps students and professionals improve their communication practices in industries such as banking, engineering, healthcare, and software. He teaches courses in storytelling, improvisation, public speaking, argumentation, rhetorical criticism, and communication ethics. A native of Brooklyn, NY, he attended the High School of Performing Arts (i.e., the "Fame" School) and incorporates his background in music and theater in both his teaching and research. Professor Armada's earlier scholarship areas were in the rhetoric of race and public memorialization. His work can be found in such journals as the Southern Communication Journal, Communication Theory, the Review of Communication, and the Review of Cultural Studies.
