A system has been developed that uses the global cellular network to upload data from the motorcycles to a cloud-based repository. This device uses the sensors already on the motorcycle to collect data and transmit at a predetermined sample rate. Collected data can then be analyzed and used as input to the development process for new motorcycles. Examples of the data usage include determining the number of miles ridden per year, the number of times certain functions are used, and weather conditions. These inputs can then be used to determine the length of tests required to verify that designs are sufficient to achieve the vehicle's full useful life. The implemented system relies on hardwiring directly to the motorcycle's sensors. Improvements include adding CANBus to expand the types of data that can be collected from each vehicle and enabling over-the-air updates to the device software to change which data is collected. Overall, the device provides the manufacturer with invaluable data without interfering with the customer's riding experience.
