Abstract Improvements to Chase and Mirth’s (1993) definition of branches of planar linkage mechanisms are proposed. The improvements extend the definition of branches to mechanisms where the earlier definition fails. The new definition utilizes immovable configurations and uncertainty configurations to divide a circuit into branches. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the added versatility of the new definition.
