Introduction

Tim is a licensed psychologist and has worked in a variety of mental health service settings over the past 20 years. Tim has had his own private practice for the past 12 years, specializing in individual and family therapy with children, adolescents, and their families. Tim also provides individual and couple therapy for adults, and he co-facilitates a weekly men’s therapy group. Tim’s scholarly interests include: important client, therapist, and societal factors for a therapist to consider in building an effective and honest therapeutic relationship with each client; the appropriate timing of and approaches utilized by therapists in addressing difficult issues with clients in therapy; and effective and respectful ways of working with adolescents and their families.

Dr. Tim Balke thoroughly enjoys working with, mentoring and teaching the students in the Graduate School of Professional Psychology (GSPP)! He is especially motivated to be supportive of and assist students in uncovering and being aware of their biases and intergenerational/family, cultural, and societal messages about gender roles and relationships. Dr. Balke works to instill in his students their appreciation for the sacredness of hearing clients' stories and struggles, and that they work diligently to stay on equal footing with and provide the most respectful care to each and every client.

Dr. Balke has worked alongside and collaboratively with healthcare providers from many different disciplines and in a variety of settings over the past 30 years; since 1997, he has been licensed as a psychologist in Minnesota. Dr. Balke consistently brings his personal (e.g., changing careers) and professional experiences (i.e., individual, couple, family, and group therapy) into his advising and teaching in the GSPP, believing that students benefit most from hearing how a clinician effectively integrates their person, theory, and research into clinical practice.
