Introduction

Dr. Monica Liu on LinkedIn

Dr. Monica Liu is a sociologist who's excited about the ways technology and society intersect. Her teaching and research dive into topics like artificial intelligence, workplace transformation and higher education reform. She focuses on the human side: how culture, incentives and trust shape whether AI succeeds in practice.

Earlier in her career, she investigated how organizations used technology to mediate complex human relationships. In her book, Seeking Western Men: Email-Order Brides Under China's Global Rise (Stanford University Press, 2022), she analyzed Chinese dating agencies that employed human translators to act as "brokers" who managed the communication and cultural gaps between users on digital platforms. Now she applies these insights to AI, helping organizations build the necessary social infrastructure to facilitate adoption.

Dr. Liu moved from Wuhan to Boston at age eight. Before joining the University of St. Thomas, she taught at Colgate University and Carleton College. She loves to travel, swim and try out new Instagram recipes.
