Introduction

Sociologist Monica Jarvi specializes in food studies focusing on the intersecting inequalities caused by poverty, race, gender, and rurality. Her dissertation research focused on the experiences of low-income, rural Minnesotans experiences with food insecurity and the use of social networks as a primary solution to attaining food. Related areas of expertise include the globalization of food, Wal-Mart and its impact on food systems, Dollar Stores, and fair-trade food chains.

Professor Jarvi teaches Introduction to Sociology courses at Dougherty Family College. Special topics in this course include research on popular culture and poverty.

Prior to teaching Sociology, Monica worked in higher education on community engaged learning and internships as well as non-profit arts organizations.
