Introduction
Debbie Shapiro teaches Professional Responsibility and Introduction to Bar Exam Skills. Prior to joining St. Thomas, she taught Legal Research and Writing and Professional Identity Formation at Mitchell Hamline School of Law. Shapiro has also taught undergraduate courses including Law in the United States, Law & Popular Culture, Religion & Law, and Power, Inequality & Social Change.
Shapiro brings to St. Thomas significant experience in educator training and professional development, having worked extensively with educators across the United States and internationally on effective strategies for reaching and teaching diverse learners. She has authored numerous resources and training materials on critical reading, writing-to-learn practices, and active learning methodologies.
In addition to her academic work, Shapiro has years of practical legal experience in trusts and estates, education law, and insurance defense.
Shapiro received her J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law. She earned her B.A. in psychology, with highest distinction, from the University of Iowa.
