Abstract
Food and the fellowship of the table capture one of the most important features of our common humanity and the desire for community. And yet many of the circumstances surrounding the production and processing of food remain hidden or obscure in our imaginations. Join us as we turn our attention to a universal feature of our common dignity – the meal and its ethical significance.
Norman Wirzba is the Gilbert T. Rowe Distinguished Professor of Christian Theology and Senior Fellow at the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke Divinity School. He is the author and editor of several books including Making Peace with the Land: God's Call to Reconcile with Creation (with Fred Bahnson), and Food and Faith: A Theology of Eating. Dr. Wirzba's work focuses on understanding and promoting practices that can equip both rural and urban church communities to be more faithful and responsible members of creation.
Following Dr. Wirba's public lecture, James Ennis, Director of Catholic Rural Life, John Mesko, Executive Director for Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES), and Elise Amel, Professor of Psychology and Director of Sustainability Initiatives at the University of St. Thomas, will offer commentary.
