Abstract
Marvin Olasky started off sounding rather libertarian in his description of compassionate conservatism ("Whassup With `Compassionate Conservatism' ?" Forum Aug. 27). The emphasis on handling matters on as local a level as possible is a Libertarian hallmark. However, Republicans have been as ready as the Democrats to embrace megalithic entities. After all, large corporations and large unions can afford large campaign contributions for help in becoming larger. If we give government our imprimatur to break that quintessential contract for stuff we like, have we not relinquished the right to complain about Waco, Elian Gonzalez, perjury, corruption or any other perceived breach of that contract by the government?
