Abstract
Each generation, a profession must renew the social compact to reassure the public that their interests are being served and that the profession may be trusted with high public purposes in its area of fiduciary responsibility. The tradition of faculty self-governance in peer review of professional competence and ethical conduct makes academic freedom unique.
