A reasonable hypothesis is that the growth of the for-profit sector of higher education, and its success in reshaping government and accreditation policies in its favor, are greater than would have been the case if faculty at institutions threatened by for-profits had demonstrated greater professionalism.4 Finally, corporations funding research increasingly limit professional autonomy through restrictive commercial agreements.
