- Annotation
- Chronicles Waugh's lifetime interest in and admiration for both Hemingway and his writing, claiming that "Hemingway and Waugh were versions of each other." Tracks the British author's references to Hemingway throughout his fiction, correspondence, and elsewhere. Drawing from Waugh's 1962 interview in which he acknowledged Hemingway as a major influence, Carver compares Waugh's Vile Bodies (1930) with The Sun Also Rises, focusing on their thematic preoccupation with alcohol, manipulative lovers, and the "graceful exit" (withdrawal from unwanted social entanglements with courtesy). Notes the last as a form of retreat practiced by both men in their personal relations as well.
