Abstract
Based in part on a teaching tool that I developed for the American Institute for History Education called "Equal," this lesson encourages students to compare the nation's founding documents with other expressions of freedom and liberty across time. Like many social and political movements before them, the Black Panthers engaged the principles established in the most scared of American documents, the Declaration of Independence, to point out the hypocrisy of American practice not living up to principle.
