- Annotation
- Response to Paul Johnson, challenging his characterization of Hemingway as an intellectual possessing a code based on standard metaphysical ideology rather than a renunciation of traditional moral values. Explores the holding attack in For Whom the Bell Tolls, showing that Hemingway and his characters do not believe in break-throughs as Johnson suggests, but rather the conventional concepts of honor, loyalty, and courage. See Johnson s Hemingway: Portrait of the Artist as an Intellectual in Commentary 87 (Feb. 1989): 49-59.
