- Annotation
- Two Hemingway anthologies appeared between 1944 and 1953: Hemingway (Viking, 1944) edited by Malcolm Cowley, and The Hemingway Reader (Scribner's, 1953), edited by Charles Poore. An examination of these two anthologies sheds new light on the role of editors, publishers, critics, reviewers, and the ups and downs of Hemingway's reputation, in the literary marketplace of the 1940s and 1950s, against the broader picture of the evolution from wartime publishing to a postwar educational publishing boom. This period also marks an important transition in how Hemingway's work was perceived—from a commercial author in the 1940s to a serious artist worthy of attention from academics.
