Annotation: Masculinity study. Takes issue with previous characterizations of Robert Cohn as a whiner unable to live up to Hemingway s concept of manhood. Contends that Cohn is the novel s model of hyper-masculinity, arguing that Jake s denigration of Cohn s Jewishness results from his insecurities over his own failed performance of manhood. Concludes that Cohn s performance exposes the nature of masculinity as a construct, and it is only after Cohn departs from the novel that Jake can articulate his own failure to live up to the white masculine ideal.
