- Annotation
- Drawing on the three-part rites of passage concept found in anthropological theory, Vernon reads the work as a war novel, arguing that Jake s journey to Pamplona, peaking with the bull fights, unconsciously replicates his war experience. Vernon examines Jake s separation from civilized Paris, transition during the violent festival, and gradual return, arguing that reliving his war experience culminates in his ringside observation of the violent combat of the bullring. Concludes that Jake s emotional progress and reintegration into civilian life depends on incorporating his prewar and soldier selves.
