- Title
- The Importance of Hemingway s "The Doctor and the Doctor s Wife"
- Author/Creator
- Charles J. Nolan
- Publication Details
- Humanities Review, Vol.5(1), pp.15-24
- Annotation
- Reads the story as suggestive of the author s life though not completely biographical. Contends that young Nick in this early story is imperative to our understanding of the later, more mature Nick and other characters, including Frederic Henry, Jake Barnes, Robert Jordan, Richard Cantwell, and David Bourne, especially in his developing attitudes toward women, race, and father-figures. In addition to A Farewell to Arms, The Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Across the River and into the Trees, and Garden of Eden, Nolan briefly discusses Indian Camp, Ten Indians, and Fathers and Sons.
