- Publication Details

- Annotation
- Analyzes Guy de Maupassant s La Maison Tellier, mile Zola's Nana (1880), and Charles Baudelaire s Les Fleurs du Mal (1857) as literary sources for Hemingway s characterization of prostitutes, and the works of douard Manet and Henri Gervex as visual inspirations. Giemza also explores a possible connection with William Holman Hunt s painting of the same title, although Hemingway denied its influence. Giemza concludes that these allusions indicate an underlying tribute to the French art and culture that Hemingway so admired.
