- Annotation
- Reads Hemingway s memoir as a response to and revision of Stein s The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933). Fong examines each author s narratological ventriloquism aimed at promoting their artistic reputations at the expense of those within their literary circle. Argues that like Stein s earlier life narrative, Hemingway s memoir subverts the conventions of paternalistic autobiography by blending the seemingly contradictory impulses of individualism and communal relationship. Discusses Hemingway s experimental conflation of perspectives and ambivalence toward his old mentor.
