- The Death of Love in A Farewell to Arms
- Author/Creator
- William E. Cain
- Publication Details
- Sewanee Review, Vol.121(3), pp.376-392
- Annotation
- Proposes the calamity of the novel to be the love between the protagonists, arguing that A Farewell to Arms is a critique of both Frederic and his self-indulgent and irresponsible relationship with Catherine. In his close reading, Cain separates Frederic s first-person narrative voice from that of Hemingway to reassert Hemingway s self-aware and psychologically astute writing style in opposition to critics who have underestimated the complexity of his thinking.
