Annotation: Examination of the novel s critical reception in Spain in the 1950s. Twomey assesses that while some critics either ignored or forgave the novel in their appreciation of Hemingway s other works, others took a genuine literary interest in the novel but downplayed its political themes. Notes that novelist Eugenia Serrano violently rejected the book, but for personal, not literary, reasons. Overall, Twomey finds that Hemingway was favorably promoted in Spain, perhaps due to the war battered country s attempt to improve its relations with wealthy Western countries.
