Abstract
This paper examines the sales of 4 types of Hoosier Lottery games using zip code level data from 1995 to 2000. It adds to the literature by examining the socioeconomic factors that influence Powerball sales, which have not previously been studied, perhaps because Powerball was introduced more recently than other lottery games. The effects of socioeconomic factors, such as race, gender, and education, on the sale of instant games, daily pick 3 and pick 4 games, and Hoosier Lotto are also studied. The introduction of 10 riverboat casinos in Indiana at different times from 1995 to 2000 is used to estimate their effects on sales of each type of lottery game near operating casinos. Finally, the increase in net sales of each lottery game in counties bordering Indiana's neighboring states due to out-of-state purchases is estimated.
