- Title
- Swiping Stein: The Ambivalence of Hemingway Parodies
- Author/Creator
- Daniel Pollack-Pelzner
- Publication Details
- Hemingway Review, Vol.30(1), pp.69-82
- Annotation
- Draws on excerpts from A Moveable Feast, as well as Hemingway s personal letters, to demonstrate the author s uncertainty in parodying Gertrude Stein in The Torrents of the Spring, My Own Life, and the unpublished The Autobiography of Alice B. Hemingway. Pollack-Pelzner attributes Hemingway s ambivalence to parody s literary dependence on the object of its criticism, thus calling into question Hemingway s ability to achieve independence from his old mentor. Also, briefly discusses Hemingway s parody of Sherwood Anderson.
