Abstract
A numerical simulation has been performed to assist in evaluating vertical-axis Savoniusstyle wind turbines. The simulation was fully three-dimensional and unsteady. Through the simulation, it was possible to assess the performance of a wind turbine that possessed novel features such as wing venting and blade caps. Results from the simulation were compared with experimental data and it was found that they were in general agreement. The simulations provide continuous information regarding air-flow patterns and velocity distributions during the rotation. Representative patterns of flow are shown.
