- Source study comparing Santiago to Homer s heroes from the Iliad and the Odyssey. Sees Santiago, demonstrating fundamental heroic characteristics, as born to fulfill his destiny as a fisherman and to be the best at it. Morgan reads Santiago s struggle with the marlin as an epic battle between two champions. Contends that not only does Santiago share similar physical characteristics with his Trojan predecessors, such as Achilles, he also demonstrates empathy with and respect for his enemy. Concludes that in the end, he succeeds through his wits, strength, and tenacity.
