- Title
- Rifles and Broad Shoulders: For Whom the Bell Tolls and Hemingway's Shifting Perspective on Gender
- Author/Creator
- Richard Reisinger
- Publication Details
- South Atlantic Review, Vol.88(1), pp.18-31
- Annotation
- In a study of "traditional" gender roles as found in Hemingway's fiction, Reisinger suggests that For Whom the Bell Tolls serves as a transitional work that has not yet been examined enough for how its main characters, especially Robert Jordan and Pilar, both align with and subvert typical masculine and feminine behaviors and identities. While considering various critical interpretations, the author concludes, for example, that "Pilar can be seen as an extension of Hemingway's willingness to transgress traditional gender norms in an effort to adhere to Modernist tendencies."
