Annotation: This essay illuminates how Hemingway is read in Algeria and how his works, most notably The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls, have a positive impact on Algerian culture. An excerpt from The Old Man and the Sea was integrated into the national Algerian school curriculum through the 1990s and an adaptation was shown on Algerian TV in French. In addition, Mohamed Arab Ait Kaci translated The Old Man and the Sea into Kabyle and a statue of Santiago with the marlin was also erected in tribute to Hemingway in Kherouba, Mostaganem. Some Algerian authors and critics have also read The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bells Tolls within an Algerian context.
