Abstract

Nursing Curriculum Leadership Concepts Change Agent Transition-to-Practice Nursing Education
Formal roles or titles do not define nursing leadership. Because nursing programs tend to present concepts theoretically rather than practically, students may complete their education without fully recognizing or embracing their leadership potential and responsibilities. This article proposes curricular insights that position leadership development as a foundational component of professional identity and a practical skill expressed consistently at the bedside. By reframing leadership as accessible, practical, and integral to bedside care, nursing education can more effectively empower graduates to lead confidently, influence patient outcomes, and advocate for quality care from the start of their professional practice. For too long, the nursing profession has defined leadership by formal roles. However, reports such as The Future of Nursing 2020–2030 (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & Medicine [NASEM], 2021) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2012) Essentials affirm that leadership is a professional expectation for all nurses, regardless of title or position. Even with these frameworks, nursing students often struggle to see how leadership principles apply to their daily practice. This article shares insights from a prelicensure nursing course that intentionally framed leadership in ways that resonate with early clinical roles. The instructor consistently used the term bedside leader to broaden students’ perceptions of leadership, emphasizing core skills and solution-focused thinking at the point of care. By translating abstract concepts into practical strategies, the course aimed to actively engage students and help them see every nurse, including themselves, as leaders.
