Williams details the rise of militant protest in New Haven CT with particular attention to the formation and development of the Black Panther Party (BPP) in that city from 1969-1974. Williams also discusses the limits of postwar liberalism with regard to black politics and challenges the enduring notion that northern urban communities offered a haven for blacks from racism, paternalism and brutality.
