Whittle discusses its complicated message regarding environmental possession, exploitation, and conservationism, contending that Hemingway fails to acknowledge his own complicity in the destruction of the natural world. Concludes that Ford s painting depicts an animal resisting the hunter s possession, thus revealing the fragility of colonial dominance.
