Last of the Blue and Gray: Old Men, Stolen Glory, and the Mystery That Outlived the Civil War

Abstract

American Civil War Contemporary problems
The story of Walter Williams, engaging simply for the protagonist's indomitable public personality, became a truly instructive case study of civil rights-era massive resistance when, upon his death, the Texas senate used the ostensible commemoration of Williams's life to publish a resolution lauding secession and decrying the national media as slanderous for having the temerity to question the authenticity of a native son of the Lone Star State.
