- Title
- Impalpable Scars: Dual Traumas in Hemingway's "Now I Lay Me" and "A Way You'll Never Be"
- Author/Creator
- Richard Kovarovic
- Publication Details
- American, British, and Canadian Studies, Vol.34(1), pp.189-207
- Annotation
- Focusing on the interconnectedness of the two stories, Kovarovic draws on psychanalytic theory to examine their parallel treatment of trauma and memory. Contends that despite Nick's attempts to restabilize and recover from his past, he remains haunted by losses suffered both in his childhood and in combat. Kovarovic argues that by interpreting Nick's memories alongside his dreams (bouts of lost consciousness), the existence of another trauma is revealed equal to the destabilizing force of his physical wounding-the obliteration of his identity symbolized through the yellow house.
