Annotation: Explores Hemingway s and his protagonists religiosity during wartime in A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Across the River and into the Trees. Pingleton focuses on the doughboy s mingling of Christian principles of the past with present fear to explain the necessity of a physical, paganist Christianity where religion is found, practiced, and expressed in nontraditional ways. Pingleton draws on contemporary conceptions of Christianity as well as the experiences of real soldiers today in his examination of the soldier s God. Concludes that Hemingway s fiction reflects a sincere interest in religion, though not conventionally reverential.
