- Title
- Hemingway and Lawrence at the Bullfights with Brett Ashley and Ethel Cane
- Author/Creator
- Ben Stoltzfus
- Publication Details
- D. H. Lawrence Studies, Vol.20(2), pp.219-231
- Annotation
- In comparing bullfighting in The Sun Also Rises to Lawrence s None of That!, Stoltzfus focuses on their parallel treatment of the emancipated woman in relation to bullfighters and sex. While Lawrence s story depicts his traditional theme of the battle between mind and body, Hemingway s focus remains upon the perils of the Lost Generation. For Hemingway, the corrida rises to the level of tragedy, far different from Lawrence s view of the spectacle as frivolous. Includes a brief contrast of their disparate writing styles. Also references Death in the Afternoon and Lawrence s The Plumed Serpent (1926) and The Escaped Cock.
