- Annotation
- Argues that in much of Hemingway s fiction, including Indian Camp, The Doctor and the Doctor s Wife, The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber, The Sun Also Rises, and A Farewell to Arms, the author pairs a na ve student with a worldly teacher who unsuccessfully instructs the uninitiated on the ways of living in a chaotic world. Contends that this pattern changed near the end of his career, most notably with the Bimini section of Islands in the Stream and The Old Man and the Sea, with Hemingway abandoning the model in favor of the na ve learning directly from life firsthand.
