- Finding One s Way as a Writer: A Sequence of Letters
- Author/Creator
- Italo Calvino
- Publication Details
- New England Review, Vol.34(1), pp.44-59
- Annotation
- Reprints correspondence spanning four decades by the Italian writer beginning with a 1950 letter in which Calvino muses over the possibility of writing an article on Hemingway from the point of view of anti-Fascist intellectuals who grew up under Fascism. Calvino characterizes Russia and America as utopian countries in the eyes of Italians, and suggests that Hemingway represents everything that America signifies, both positive and negative. Concludes by praising Hemingway s writing style, but casts doubt on his relevancy for today s reader.
