- Covers Hemingway's biographical connections to Fitzgerald and disparaging comments about him in "Snows." Takahashi compares Fitzgerald's thematic treatment of the destructive power of wealth in his 1934 novel with Hemingway's 1936 short story, speculating on Hemingway's motives for writing about Fitzgerald. Concludes that a close of reading of Dick's and Harry's use of the word "blunted" to describe their professional deterioration reveals Hemingway's authorial anxieties over his declining career during the 1930s. Contends that while Dick/Fitzgerald was unable to understand his own role in his professional failure, Harry's recognition of the role his choices played suggests Hemingway's hope for overcoming his writing slump.
