Abstract
In this article, I study how En tierra extraña, the 2014 documentary by Icíar Bolllaín, presents an alternative tale to official narratives regarding Spanish migration, in this case, to Edinburgh after the economic crisis of 2008. The documentary investigates the new migrant figure and the contemporary migrant phenomenon, and in the process constructs a tale that denounces the image of the migrant as a failed homo œconomicus. At the same time, the film emphasizes the role that neoliberal politics play in the process of creating precarious employment and the forced expulsion of certain citizens for the survival of the capitalist system in place.
