Abstract
Argues that the Catholic social tradition is a useful resource for Catholic universities that are seeking an integration of Catholic Social Teaching & the professional schools. It is noted that the Catholic understanding of knowledge integrates intellectual, moral, & spiritual dimensions of human experience. The role of the Catholic social tradition, which includes Catholic Social Teachings, Catholic Social Thought, & Catholic Social Practice, is examined in relation to the task of integration, particularly its ability to challenge the split between liberal arts & professional studies that leads to professional fragmentation. Special consideration is given to the importance of the virtue of prudence within the social tradition of the Church & the pedagogy required to cultivate prudence as a habit. Specific contributions of the liberal arts, professional courses, & integration studies to the education of technically competent & morally grounded professional are pointed out. The goal of graduating students who have the courage to resist professional conformity & the "going-rate" morality embodied in many professions is discussed. J. Lindroth
