Annotation: This essay deals with the second film version of A Farwell to Arms (1957) by focusing on the fact that it was shot in Italy during the period of greatest governmental censorship in the history of the Republic. Resituating the film in the political context that shaped its production, it argues that Italian authorities operated a strong control on the remake of Hemingway s war novel and demanded changes in the script that were responsible for many of the controversies that the adaptation aroused. It finally investigates how Pasolini s long-neglected notes to the film script received and reinterpreted Hemingway s reading of war as a site of class struggle.
