- Author/Creator
- H. R. Stoneback
- Publication Details
- North Dakota Quarterly, Vol.70(4), pp.63-80
- Annotation
- Demonstrates how swimming and tanning motifs in Hemingway s fiction leads to greater understanding of his iceberg theory. Stoneback examines how these motifs in The Sun Also Rises, The Garden of Eden, and Summer People, unite themes of sex, creativity, shadow, and innocence. The tip of the shark fin as an iceberg image of evil is introduced through close analyses of Islands in the Stream and The Old Man and the Sea. Stoneback intentionally foregoes attributing spiritual meaning to sun and sea images, focusing instead on the concrete textual details that convey mystery.
