For centuries, musicians have found employment in battle and other outdoor arenas, and within this tradition, horse-mounted trumpeters and kettledrummers have held prominent positions, with the horse adding a sense of grandeur and nobility. The present study focuses on this military and court tradition from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century.
