- Annotation
- Biographical approach arguing that knowledge of Hemingway s exposure to Darwinian science sheds light on the tension between faith and reason in his canon. Gives evidence from young Hemingway s zoology notebook that evolution was emphasized in his education. Concludes that while Hemingway seems to have resisted accepting evolution and eugenics, the rationalist training of his class helped to make him a scientifically minded writer with an undeniable spiritual longing.
