Abstract
There is a need for beginner string pedagogy that offers students a wider variety of genres, more contemporary options, and more opportunities for improvisation and composition. While existing method books offer basic tools for access to instruments, they often neglect to foster growth in a students’ understanding in the broader musical world and can even go so far as to include songs with harmful histories. This reimagined beginner curriculum is crafted to: meet students where they are in terms of musical understanding; stretch their knowledge of styles beyond Western European Classical Art Music; and foster more opportunities for collaboration and creation. The content and processes are designed to connect students to their school community and expand their thinking toward a global perspective. Included songs highlight cultural and musical assets already present in class. This manual is intended to be ever evolving as the author learns more and as student needs and interests change.
