Abstract

science fiction
Texts are in constant conversation with one another. Understanding how those texts interact with each other gives interpreters a better understanding of the texts, as well as a crucial amount of the context behind how audiences understand those texts. Looking at a single story’s connections and mapping out how those connections influence interpretations is an effective way to explore the conversations between texts, in what I call a textual matrix. By looking at the story of Dune, we can better understand what the story is saying across its many interpretations, and we can learn how to understand a text through its textual matrix.
