Abstract
Spotlight on Auxiliary Percussion addresses the technical and pedagogical neglect of auxiliary percussion instruments during ensemble rehearsals. While these instruments are critical for providing color and texture, student performers often lack the specific techniques required for proper execution, leading to poor tone quality, unsatisfactory control of dynamics and sustain, and potential rehearsal inefficiency to address these issues. To bridge this instructional gap, Spotlight on Auxiliary Percussion provides a curriculum centered on a universal framework applicable to any percussion instrument. Through the integration of these fundamentals into structured exercises, etudes and ensemble works, the percussionists get adequate repetition on these techniques which wouldn’t happen otherwise. Ultimately, this approach offers music educators a practical strategy to improve section engagement and overall ensemble sonority while developing well-rounded percussionists.
