Abstract
Professional development is an important part of teachers’ lives. The main purpose of educator professional development is to positively influence student learning by developing teacher’s skills and knowledge. When teachers are provided the opportunity to increase their abilities through quality professional development activities, it can result in an increased capability to influence student outcomes. This review explores the related literature on music educator professional development. It examines the following main themes from the literature: professional development’s effects on self-efficacy, models of growth for educator behavior change, the role of collaboration in professional development, professional development’s impact on job satisfaction, challenges and needs of music educators, current trends in music educator professional development, and policies and funding of professional development.
